Shortlist by job, not category name
PDF parsing APIs and document extraction APIs now overlap. LlamaParse, Reducto, Unstructured, Mistral OCR, LandingAI ADE, Docling, Tensorlake, Firecrawl, and DocuPipe are often evaluated for RAG preprocessing and LLM-ready document data. Cogneris belongs in the same evaluation when parsed content also has to become validated JSON, review state, webhooks, and audit evidence.
| Vendor | Strongest fit | Watch during evaluation |
|---|---|---|
| LlamaParse | Developer-friendly parsing for LlamaIndex/RAG workflows | How much production workflow logic you still need to build |
| Reducto | Schema extraction, citations, and RAG-oriented parsing | Whether review, validation, and portal workflows are first-class enough |
| Unstructured | Partitioning and preprocessing heterogeneous files for RAG | Table fidelity, field validation, and downstream operational state |
| Mistral OCR | OCR-to-Markdown and multimodal document understanding | Workflow controls, audit metadata, and low-confidence routing |
| LandingAI ADE | Agentic extraction, grounding, and visual document workflows | API contract, pricing shape, and integration fit |
| Docling | Open-source parsing and document conversion in developer pipelines | Operational review, hosted reliability, and audit evidence |
| Tensorlake | Benchmark-driven document parsing and extraction for AI systems | Workflow controls, schema governance, and production exception handling |
| Firecrawl | Web and document content extraction feeding AI apps | Business-document validation, citations, review state, and portal workflows |
| DocuPipe | Document extraction pipeline for PDFs, spreadsheets, and RAG-ready content | How extraction, review, and workflow ownership map to your operating model |
| Cogneris | RAG-ready parsing plus schema extraction, validation, review, and audit trail | Best fit when document AI must feed both search and operations |
Evaluation checklist
Test each API on scanned PDFs, native PDFs, PPTX and PowerPoint exports, Word documents, tables, multi-page packets, handwritten fields, checkboxes, signatures, and documents with repeated labels. Score layout-aware chunks, Markdown quality, semantic chunking, table preservation, visual grounding, source citations, JSON schema compliance, latency, retry behavior, and review workload.
RAG-ready is not enough
RAG-ready output helps answer questions. Operations-ready output also validates totals, normalizes dates, flags low-confidence fields, deduplicates packets, and explains every value with source evidence. If a wrong value can trigger a payment, claim, approval, or compliance failure, include workflow metrics in the bakeoff.
